Scope
The scope includes fully generated media, face and voice manipulation, inserted elements, and ordinary edits within an AI-assisted workflow. Examine the acquired version and distinguish it from earlier originals, previews, screenshots, and platform-transcoded copies.
Questions worth testing
- Which portion of the object is in question?
- What transformations separate this copy from the source?
- Do independent creation or capture records survive?
Evidence and study material
Original files, encoded streams, frame sequences, audio tracks, edit histories, sidecars, Content Credentials, and records from capture or generation systems can answer different parts of the question. Preserve container metadata before extracting individual streams.
Methods to begin with
Limits on interpretation
Compression, resizing, screenshots, transcoding, and post-processing can obscure signals or introduce new ones. Evaluation should include these conditions rather than relying only on clean benchmark objects.
Open research questions
Open work includes localized manipulation testing, audio-video consistency, and lineage that survives redistribution. A useful study publishes transformations and negative controls as carefully as successful detections.
Tools, projects, datasets, and publication
Use the Artifact Report format to record a media-processing environment; the project has no validated media detector or empirical deepfake corpus to recommend. Journal methods and replications should expose their evaluation data.
How do you design a useful media comparison?
Define the target claim before assembling samples. Keep generation, ordinary editing, capture, and redistribution labels separate. Include the compression, resizing, screenshots, or re-recording conditions relevant to the real input rather than evaluating only pristine originals.
Publish the selection method, labels, transformations, counts, and errors by condition. The result then describes the tested population instead of implying that one aggregate accuracy value covers all synthetic media.
